I knew that I had a love for diving when, as a kid, I would frequently picture my bed as the boat that would carry me deep into the waters that not even Jacques Cousteau himself had discovered. Night after night I would dive into the vast seas of adventure, exploring every ledge and cavern that my bedroom floor had to offer. Looking back now, I know that it was then that my desire for the unknown was ignited.
I started diving in the mid 90s and with 7 kids; it was never easy to find the funds to support my little adventures. I unfortunately, had to put my diving to bed.
I had been on a surface interval for a little over a decade; much longer than I had intended. During that time no one in the family was allowed to discuss diving, or even watch it on television in my presence. It was not until one of my sons wanted to get certified and refused to do it without me, that I knew I was back! After all, It is not every day that a 16 year-old wants to spend time with his father . I will never forget the words of my wife "Don't ever let money get in the way of spending quality time with your kids,we will sell the house if need be, but you are going diving". I certainly heard that!
As of today, 6 out of my 7 kids dive. It was out of the desire to spend time with my kids that spawned the Family Dive Shack. First, it was just a way to offset the cost, but now, it is a mission to eliminate the "too expensive" excuse that keeps people from experiencing the amazing beauty of a of God's under water creation.
